This started off great, slowed down in the middle, then took a weird left in the last quarter. I liked her other books, but this felt like she was bored writing it and wanted to spice it up without thinking about what was going on in the book.

Emma Holly's work is usually a highly erotic read for me, and Fairyville contained many of Ms. Holly's trademarks. But this book was hampered by too much back-story. The heroine, Zoe, lives in Fairyville, AZ (which is akin to Sedona, AZ), where she not only communicates with the dead for a living, but also with a coterie of pint-sized fairies. Her love interest, Magnus, is also of the fairy race, but he is a six-foot-six fairy prince who escaped the clutches of his evil mother, Titania, Queen of Fairy, by crossing into the human realm and living as a sort of supernatural illegal immigrant in the US. Magnus has competition for Zoe's affections, in the form of ANOTHER fairy prince (who, for long and complicated reasons, doesn't actually know he's not human), Alex, with whom Zoe was in love as a teen-ager. There are many, many, many explanations of fairies (despite the obvious allusions to Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream) with the unfortunate result of not nearly enough scenes between Zoe and Magnus. I only remember two or three scenes between them, actually, which is my biggest problem with the book. When they finally do manage a little nookie, Zoe and Magnus are definitely sexy, as are Zoe and Alex. Ms. Holly often provides her heroines with multiple sexual partners, one of her trademarks, which is fine by me, but I wish there had been more nookie overall and less description of fairies and fairy realms.
