Reader Review: An interesting concept that works well...in an era where women are invisible. Emmaline is bright vivacious strongwilled and a survivor...yet vulnerable particular in economic terms. Sedgwick deserves everything that he got, including Emmaline finally. Enjoyable read and engaging.
"
Alexander Denford, Baron Sedgwick, is a gentleman to be envied. He lives a rakish life of well-celebrated ease and contentment and has one person to thank for his perfectly ordered existence - his dearest wife, Emmaline. She never complains about his mistresses or his penchant for late nights out. His friends are envious, but they don't know the truth - Emmaline doesn't exist. But when he starts receiving bills from London for clothes, shoes, hats and a staggering amount of other female accoutrements, he realises something is decidedly amiss.
Posing as Emmaline isn't a stretch for the newly arrived Lady Sedgwick, she's been conning gentry for years. But as the popular baron's wife, she now has the one thing that has eluded her - entree into London's inner circles. Against Alexander's better judgment, Emmaline is impossibly fixed in his life. And suddenly Emmaline is challenging him to be the husband she deserves.

I did not like this book very much, the characters seemed to me a little to much forced into the situations, and the baron a completely fool, because Emmaline definitely was not such a charming woman to let her continue with the silly situation.

Something About Emmaline is, I believe, is one of the top three novels written by Elizabeth Boyle. It's a rollicking adventure filled with fun coincidences. It was obviously inspired by The Importance of Being Earnest, by Oscar Wilde, but with a romantic twist. The hilarity of the novel is genuine, and the prose sparkles - as though Boyle really enjoyed writing every word.

This story kept me laughing from the beginning right to the end. Alex has his wonderful wife, Emmaline, for such a brief period of time. Then reality strikes home and his life will never be the same. Emmaline "recovers" from her illness, leaves their country estate and comes to be with her "beloved" in London. Alex has to do a very quick about face and the sparks fly as Emmaline decides to spend his money to keep it out of the hands of his rotten cousin, who hopes that Emmaline is to ill to bear children. Frankly, Emmaline looks pretty darn good and Alex is now the proud owner of a very big problem! I have already read this book several times and it's one of my favorites. You won't be sorry you bought this book if you like laughter and love, naughtiness and highjinks!
