Reader Review: This is a much better book than the previous one in the series. The plotting is much better, and the characters more interesting. However, there are a couple of things I did not like about the main love story. Shelby, the ‘timid virgin’ happily discussed her sex life with everybody. Secondly, Shelby did all the work in this relationship. She let Luke go, and he did not go after her. She had to return to him and just about beg to be with him! That said, Robyn Carr has an amazing ability to create memorable characters, and much of this comes through her dialogue. There are so many times in her books when I smile, or even laugh out loud. She has a great sense of humour. The side stories – the author likes to have a number of stories running at the same time – were generally far more compelling and relevant than they have been in previous books. I was so happy to see the evolution of a relationship of sorts for Cameron. I would have liked for Brie and Mike to have had a better story here. I love that couple, and felt as though I was short-changed. I found the Walt/Muriel relationship boring and silly. I did not like the way the author made this fictional character friends with real-life movie stars. There was still too much focus on women’s health and babies, but it was SO much better, and so much less obvious than in the other books. I’d like to see a better editor for this series. Through all of the books I have come across so many mistakes. For example, ‘quiet and quite’ and ‘there and their’ mix-ups. But for all the flaws, there’s a reason I stayed up until 5am to finish this book. Robyn Carr’s writing really draws you in. Her previous books have been good but hugely flawed, but this one really has something good going on.

At twenty-five, after five years as her mother's caregiver, it's time for Shelby to experience freedom and adventure. Time for travel, college and romance. But when she visits Virgin River, she runs into Luke Riordan, decidedly not whom she has in mind.

A handsome Blackhawk pilot, Luke exited the army after twenty years, four wars and having been shot out of the sky three times. At thirty-eight he's tough and jaded. His major was in one-night stands, with a minor in commitment avoidance.

Technically, these two are all wrong for one another. But sometimes what you want and what you need are two different things...two very good things.

Temptation Ridge

Shelby was within ten miles of her Uncle Walt's ranch when she had to pull over to the side of highway 36, the busiest stretch between Virgin River and Fortuna, behind an old pickup truck that looked vaguely familiar. Although 36 was the highway that ran across the mountains from Red Bluff to Fortuna, it was mostly two lane. She put her cherry-red Jeep SUV in Park and stepped out of the vehicle. The rain had finally stopped, giving way to a bright summer sun, but the road was wet and splattered with muddy puddles. She peered way up the road to see a man wearing a bright orange vest holding a stop sign toward a long string of cars, closing both lanes. The turnoff to her Uncle Walt's would be on the other side of the next hill.

She picked her way around puddles to the truck parked in front of her, intending to ask the driver if he knew what was going on. When she got to the driver's window she smiled. "Well, hey, Doc."

Doc Mullins looked out the open window. "Hey, yourself, little girl. Up here for a weekend of riding?" he asked with his usual grumpy tone.

"Not this time, Doc. I sold my mother's house in Bodega Bay," she said. "Packed up the bare essentials and am moving in with Uncle Walt for a while."

"Permanently?"

"Nah. For a few months, though. I'm still in transition."

Doc's grimace melted slightly, but only slightly. "Once again, condolences on your loss, Shelby," he said. "I hope you're doing all right with that."

"Better all the time, thanks. My mom was ready to go." She tilted her head up the road. "Have any idea what's holding us up here?"

"Soft shoulder gave out," he said. "I passed it on my way to Valley Hospital. Dumped half this lane down the hill. They're repairing."

"Guardrails would b

I notice that there is a recurring theme of young girl and older guy. Which works for me. I like her books.

I love each of these series and this one is just as good. Shelby deserves love as much as Luke. Even though Luke is determined to be self sacrificing, Shelby grit and determination gets them through.

Very tempting...

In this journey back to Virgin River, we find three romances in play. The main storyline involves Shelby McIntyre, who is Walt Booth's niece. Shelby returns following her mother's death and after having sold their home. She plans to stay with Walt and his family for a while and then plans to start college next year. That is until she meets Luke Riordan on the way into town. Luke has recently retired from the Army and plans to decompress in Virgin River for the time being while he renovates the cabins on his riverfront property that he purchased with his brother, Sean, some years ago. Luke is 38 and Shelby is 25. He's skittish about her age and is commitment phobic. She's got him in her crosshairs.

Meanwhile, the romance between Walt and Muriel moves into higher gear. They finally realize that this is a friendship that's got some traction and finally acknowledge they are a couple.

Lastly, Abby MacCall Crawford, one of Vanni's best friends from her flight attendant days, is dealing with the demise of her marriage. She's part of Nikki's wedding party but doesn't want to let her friends know she's in trouble, even though they sense something is off. Abby has a memorable night with Cameron Michaels after the wedding (he just happened to be having dinner at the same hotel as the wedding reception). You may remember Cameron as the doctor Vanni's former mother-in-law was trying to set her up with following Matt's death. Cameron is hooked but Abby is pretty gun shy.

These romances are all going on in the midst of the day to day living of the other residents of Virgin River. As with the others in this series, old friends are also substantively woven into the storyline. It's what makes this series and this book so special.

I hated finishing this story so much I immediately started reading the next book in the series. There's something for everyone and this is one of the best so far.
