What the hell was wrong with her? Mary kicked at the water swirling around her feet and sent a splash of frustration towards the falls. She should be looking for signs of trouble and instead she was mooning over a man. What an idiot.
She took a deep breath and then another one. When her chaotic thoughts were slightly more under control she listened for the voices to come to her again. They were silent now. Why had they stopped calling? Were they waiting for her and Sloan to follow directions? Could they be leading them into a trap?
No. Sloan thought that but she knew the villagers didn’t mean them any harm. Her gut told her they were peaceful and wouldn’t hurt her or Sloan.
But if they weren’t hurting Sloan, why hadn’t he come back for her yet?
What if he couldn’t? What if they captured him as soon as he stepped through the water? What if he tripped on a rock on the way in and was even now lying on the ground waiting for help? What if he hit his head and fell in the water and was drowning?
Mary wrung her hands harder with every “what if”. Should she go in after him? He had told her to wait and he’d come back for her. But what if he couldn’t? She bit her lip in indecision.
She’d wait five more minutes and if he hadn’t come back by then she was going in after him. There was no way in hell she was running back to the cage like a frightened little girl.
