Chapter One
Sadie Walker kicked a piece of straw off her stiletto as she stepped out from under the threatening clouds and into the quiet barn. Buckets were stacked neatly by the door and bridles hung from hooks. Watching every step, she moved between the stalls. Two horses poked their heads out.
Where was everyone? She’d been at the farm for over fifteen minutes and hadn’t seen a single person. It was Tuesday afternoon and she had an interview scheduled. There had to be someone around—somewhere—so she kept moving carefully through the damp heat.
If she let herself be charmed by the musky scent of animals and the practical beauty of a well-kept farm she’d have been in heaven. But she wasn’t. Not charmed—or in heaven. She’d left farm fields and country life behind her.
If she’d actually been awake when the temp agency called, instead of groggy from yet another night of worrying about that ever-growing stack of bills, she would’ve passed on this particular interview. But she had agreed to come, so she had to go through with it. Just one no-show and the temp agency would cut her off. As it was, Work Force Now was her last hope of getting a job and if something didn’t click soon with her and the world of employment she’d be faced with reinventing herself all over again. And once was definitely enough for that.
“Ma’am… Ma’am?”
Three careful steps later, Sadie realized that someone, a man, was ...
